What craft do you work with?
Fresh Creative Abertawe is a not for profit organization which provides creative opportunities for children, young people and members of marginalised and disadvantaged groups. We run Graffiti Letter and Spray Can Art workshops for people who are interested in trying out graffiti/art with spray paint.
How would you best describe your workspace?
We can do workshops at one of our city centre venues, on the High Street and at the bottom of Constitution Hill, or can provide classes in schools or the community.
What are the main inspirations for your work?
We believe that creativity is fundamental to being human and opportunities to be creative should be available to everyone. Empowerment and social inclusion are primary drivers of what we do.
What are the creative processes in the workshops you run?
At our Graffiti Letter Workshops, experienced graffiti artists help participants to design and paint letters in a graffiti style onto a 1.5ft x4 ft board. The session involves applying a number of crucial graffiti techniques. Participants find out about different graffiti styles; sketch out their letters and choose their colours; and learn spray-can control, spray-can safety and relevant graffiti techniques.
Our Spray Can Art sessions explore different ways that spray paint can be used, with techniques such as masking/stencils/paint mixing/dabbing being used to achieve different effects.
What other artists and groups do you collaborate with?
We work with many community organisations, primary and secondary schools. Our artists collaborate throughout the design and creative process to develop and paint large scale murals that engage with the community in order to give a voice to its members; displaying public ownership and providing a sense of belonging to that community.
