Info

Mini introduction on who you are, where you are from and what you do.

I´m Fernanda Carvalho, a ceramicist who studies ceramic material from different perspectives. I was born in Brazil, where I started working with ceramics while studying Fine Arts. I currently live in Portugal, where I continue to be closely connected with ceramic art and heritage, although I´m more dedicated to looking at the conservation and restoration of this material.

What makes you passionate about your craft/profession?

It was the material. The possibility of creating and moulding the clay, the direct manual labour, the need to know the production techniques and the material to achieve what you want, and the unforeseen events that come with the firing process. The durability of the material after firing also makes me think about my own production, about what I want to keep, since, with proper care, the objects last over time.

Why does craft matter?

Crafts are important because they allow the creativity of the people who produce them to flourish, they stimulate the economy and preserve knowledge, manual production techniques and the local culture itself.
