Crafting Voices: An Interview with Christin Løkke
What inspires you to work with these crafts, especially clay?
My inspiration comes from a place of deep reflection on my background. I believe that clay, as a medium, has a unique ability to convey not only physical forms but also the rich narratives embedded in Sami culture.
Your work has been described as a political comment. Can you elaborate on the themes and messages you aim to convey through your art?
Certainly. My art is a response to the challenges faced by the northern communities, particularly those involved in fishing. I use my craft to shed light on the impact of regulations and quotas, especially on the Sea Sami fishermen and coastal people in the north. It’s a political comment on the cultural shifts brought about by such policies.
Could you share some insights into your creative process? How do you bring these narratives to life through your craft?
My creative process involves a profound exploration of phenomenological dimensions. I delve into the past, using clay as a vessel to navigate the historical challenges, political transformations, and cultural shifts. Every piece I sculpt becomes a narrative, a story waiting to be told.
Your focus on the challenges faced by small boat fishermen is intriguing. How do you use your art to reflect on their struggles?
Fishing is not just an occupation in the north; it’s a way of life. Through my art, I aim to reflect the struggles faced by small boat fishermen who, due to regulations and quotas, found themselves not only losing their livelihoods but also a vital part of their cultural identity.
In the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, how do you see your work contributing to the resilience of Sami culture?
I see my work as a testament to the endurance of Sami culture. Through the subtle contours of clay and the transformative power of metalworking, I aim to create more than art; I want to initiate conversations. My pieces invite viewers to engage with the complex tapestry of Sami heritage, fostering an appreciation for its resilience.
