Culture & Context

Inspired by a superstition told to me by my gran, that followed the lines of, if someone gifts you a brooch, you should gift them a penny back to ensure that the brooch will always bring the wearer luck. With this project i gifted people i knew these brooches and in exchange they gifted me a penny back in return. this project allowed me a platform to share the superstitions and stories my Gran told me in a fun and exciting way. These brooches where a combination of two superstitions, the first being the exchange of a brooch for a penny and the second being saying the phrase “bread and butter” to counteract bad luck and bring togetherness between two people if they split a poll or lamppost.
