Culture & Context

A cushion with a concealed zip is good when making a patterned cushion cover as unlike envelope cushion it will not cut through your design. It also leave a clean crisp finish to work. Once you are able to attach it to a cushion you can try more tricky makes like a concealed zip on a skirt.

Process & Production

First I create a pattern piece, square, with a mark for where the label will go. If I want a cover for a 45 x 45 cm cushion I often, depending on fabric type, will make a 43 x 43cm cover in order for it to look extra filled when the pad is in. I add 1 cm of seam allowance to the pattern. Then I cut 2 pieces of fabric using my pattern pieces. Before adding in the zip I overlock the side where the zip will go. Add the zip, it will be fully open – with concealed zip you have to unroll the zip teeth slightly to sew closely. I use a zipper foot specifically for hidden/concealed zip which is less tricky as it does it for you.  Change back to a standard sewing foot.Pin the other sides together and sew around the cushion. Make sure that the zip is still open. Overlock the other 3 sides.Turn the cushion through to the right way round. Press cushion.Add cushion insert.
