Culture & Context

In trying to achieve a painterly effect to hand tufted textiles I tufted first in neutral colours then overdyed with acid dyes for wool.

Process & Production

The textile sample was soaked in a vinegar solution and left to drip for a while otherwise the dyes spread too much into surrounding areas.  Applying the dye from the pile face of the textile I used spraying, dabbing, injecting the dye to see how the textile absorbed each method. I set the dye in a 90degree dishwasher cycle with the textile piece raised on a slatted grill securely enclosed and sealed in a large plastic bag.  Rinsing through proved fastness of the dye.
