Storytelling

“Il Rosone” window of Matera Cathedral is surrounded by four figures placed at the four cardinal points. Trying to draw an imaginary line connecting the four figures two by two, we notice an obvious asymmetry that stands to emphasize human imperfection. The characters in the rose window belong to the Christian tradition such as the Archangel Michael at the top and to the mythological and pagan tradition such as the three telamons. At the bottom is the character of Atlas, a titan who was punished by Zeus for spearheading the Giants’ revolt and condemned to hold the vault of heaven on his own shoulders. Team Art Studio’s flat sets break down the rosette and bring the concept of shifting balance in which everything spins into a single line of tableware.
