Culture & Context
By their nature, owls and owlets possess a special significance.
Thoughtful and brooding animals, endowed with a hypnotic, wise and watchful gaze, they stay awake mostly at night. Ideally, the owl is linked to the moon, associated with soldiers engaged in guarding and those who apply themselves in studies; it is a symbol of wisdom, effrontery, defense, calmness, stubbornness, wildness, a divine vehicle.
In Magna Graecia, the owl is consecrated by the Goddess Athena and elected as a symbol of knowledge.
In Roman times with the Goddess Minerva it is replaced by the owl.
Indeed, the belief that these birds were evil creatures and omen of death became widespread. For ages and cultures they have been the protagonists of myths, legends and artifacts taking on two iconic values that have continued to reverse and exchange.
