Culture & Context

This material is inspired by micro-environment i.e. lichen, mosses and fungi that grow on trees and fallen timber which I often see on my wanderings around the countryside.

Process & Production

This work explores a sculptural combination of natural and manmade materials using driftwood as the ‘host space’. Finely woven metal, monofilament and viscose fabrics are moulded into the grain and natural form of the driftwood. The monofilament sections allow the fabric to pleat between the metal areas which remain rigid. The fabric is intensively hand manipulated using fine rods and then shaped into a form to fit into the wood. It is worked into the wood until it is fully integrated into its host, the wood.
