A book block formed of folded and sewn pages has an adhesive layer put over the spine and is then rounded to form a curved spine. Once the desired round is achieved the book is backed, or given shoulders in which the book board or cover can comfortably sit. Books, over time and with repeated use, will gradually become concave at the spine. Rounding the spine extends the longevity of the book by counteracting this.
