Sewn book block

Heritage

Other

Traditional

Paper is folded and nested into sections, which are then sewn together. The sewing can be supported or unsupported; supported involves the addition of cord or tapes. A folded and sewn book block is much stronger and will last longer than pages that are just glued together. It also enables the book to open more easily.

Culture & Context

Although the exact technique, materials, and style of sewing will vary through history and by geography, all books were traditionally sewn together. It is only with the machine age that glued together books have become the most common form.
