The Residency Online Group Sessions

August and September 2021 was the start of our Craft Hub Maker Exchange Residencies with a first digital round of both group and peer to peer residencies. Here is a deep dive into how the group residencies have facilitated peer networking, exchange and inspiration for participating practitioners.

Session 1 kicked off by the Craft Hub coordinators, Carlow County Council, Ireland, which brought together over 60 creative professionals from across Europe. Session 1 was very much focused on a discussion around Craft Hub , the opportunities, the benefits of shared learning and with specific focus on how to leverage and enhance the digital sessions in order to facilitate the following residency experiences.

Session 2 was hosted by OsloMet University, Norway who explored how craft is not only about creating forms and products but how it can enhance aesthetic awareness, and influence embodied interaction with the material world – through movements and forces. The use of Miro Boards was introduced as a concept to the group and  three breakout rooms were lively and very interactive.

This was followed by Session 3 which was all about waste and facilitated by Design School Kolding, Denmark. Both leaders presented fascinating research into their experimentation with waste, namely PLA. The hands-on element of the residency exercises through drawing and making objects from everyday household materials was fun and engaging. Participants were excited to share their processes, thoughts, and reflections.

Session 4 was facilitated by Nova School of Science and Technology, Lisbon focusing on Creative Exchange – Art and Science in Harmony? A study on glass as a material and how this scientific knowledge, the aesthetics of science and the processing speed can influence the creative process. This session was driven by engaging and energetic presenters and 49 participants curious to understand more about the research developed at the research unit VICARTE.

The final session was hosted by Glaasmalerai Peters, Germany and the leaders focused on the possibilities of working in glass in many different settings, countries, locations, various scales with multiple techniques. The presentation showing a snippet of Glaasmalerai Peters’ work was fascinating and inspiring. It is clear the studio is pushing glass to the limit in partnership with their collaborators and artists.
