Angela Difonzo
I am Angela Difonzo creative of Apulian origin who moved to Matera at the age of 1. For 10 years I worked as an interior designer. After leaving a permanent contract job, in 2012 I embark, in a brave world, on a new adventure. I open to the public a creative workshop "Hands in Art" located in the historic center of Matera, to externalize and share my love for art and everything that surrounds it. In the workshop every material takes shape and is transformed into unique, original and entirely handmade objects. In recent years I have deepened my artistic studies by experimenting with painting techniques that contribute to the development and refinement of my creativity. In my work I prefer research and analysis of informal, material experience. My work ranges from canvases of paintings, bags, and jewelry to the painting of wearable fabrics such as scarves and shoulder covers.
Q&A
What craft do you work with?
My favorite technique in recent times is the use of brass, aluminum and copper foils for jewelry making. My workshop also features recycled materials.
What inspires you to work with this craft?
I am passionate about craftsmanship. I love seeing how from an idea one can arrive at a finished object that can be worn. Each object is unique and tells a little bit about me, my passion and sometimes my city.
How do you start your creative process?
Sometimes I start with a draft that I then rework until I get the imagined result. Sometimes I start directly from the material and get inspired by it. The most difficult part of my work is when I cannot easily achieve the desired result because I do not have adequate equipment as my workshop and store is very small.
How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?
It is a small space in the historic center with a window overlooking the beautiful Sassi di Matera, a view from which it is easy to take inspiration. It is one between workshop and exhibition. Sometimes in the summer I work outdoors, especially if I paint, and I gladly share my passions with passersby.
Are there new techniques you would like to try?
Lost wax casting.
What have you learnt or the best advice you have received that you would like to share with fellow crafters?
With those who already know these techniques so that I can compare and improve.
