Arthur – heArthur – van Buuren

I (heArthur) work in glass (more specifically, Bullseye sheetglass)

Q&A

Artist Statement

heArthur experiments with colors and graphic forms to create striking three-dimensional objects. He has developed his own ‘3D-glassfusion’-technique, an innovation that enables him to melt glass together, instead of using glue, while maintaining the form of the object.
This leads to a new ‘visual language’ in glass. While usually results from glassfusion are flat and two-dimensional, the new forms made by heArthur are open and three-dimensional. The new technique allows for spatial interpenetrations represented in glass, hitherto unimaginable.
In the process of creation various stories, memories and images steer his mind. As a result, the glass objects heArthur creates are intuitively inspired glass personalities.

What craft do you work with?

My name is Arthur van Buuren. I have worked with many different materials, but ultimately it is glass that makes my heart beat faster. That is why I present my work as ‘heArthur’.

What inspires you to work with this craft?

In my work I experiment with graphic forms and colours to create striking three-dimensional objects from glass.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

In summer 2020 I have established my pop-up workshop to experiment with glass fusion techniques. It is a process of trial and error. Slowly and steadily I am expanding my horizons and possibilities of the objects I am able to successfully produce.
