Q&A
Artist Statement
Diana’s works often are sculptural objects where different techniques from the craft fields are brought together. The diversity of the materials, textures and colors directs the senses, often citing a tangibility and mobility of the pieces. Her works invite the viewer into a dialogue about identity and cultural differences, traditions and social norms. |
What craft do you work with?
Ceramics and Glass. I started working with ceramics and glass since I was small in my father studio. It’s hard to pick a specific technique as my favorite but I will say I like to hand build my works. |
What inspires you to work with this craft?
I appreciate the importance of the craft in the present society. Craft seems as one way to reconnect with ourself and the natural habitat. I like to use locally picked clay from the area were I leave and try to create with it. |
How do you start your creative process?
I always start an idea on paper and many works are only left on paper. For me paper is a medium to define and clarify the shapes and forms that I work with. The most difficult part for me is to place a work in the kiln and to do it without breaking the piece, at that stage I’m. usually tired or excited that the piece is done. |
How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?
My workplace is relative. I can find and create anywhere I go, its important to make sure that is not to windy or sunny so that the material does’t dry to fast. I need few wood tools and maybe some water. |
Are there new techniques you would like to try?
I hope in the future I have more time to experiment with Raku burnings and wood burnings. |
What have you learnt or the best advice you have received that you would like to share with fellow crafters?
Work, work, work, maintain the flow of the work, don’t let big pauses break your creative process. I hope to create using clay fire places and collaborate with someone that knows the craft. |
