Q&A

Artist Statement

I love to experiment with materials and create expressions that can be translated into textiles and surface. As we are living in a more and more digitized society I believe the importance of surrounding us with sensory materials are getting more important.

What craft do you work with?

At the moment my main focus are on woven structure. The loom fits my temper really well. I love working with really complex drafts – I love going to this with an almost mathematical approach. This combined with the loom as a medium to create creative expressions really intrigues me. On of my main focuses are also on the materials in combinations with the construction. Choosing the right materials is quit essential to achieve what you are searching for. I have a love for natural materials like wool, silk, linen and hemp. But I really also enjoy testing more technical man-made fibers that has specific properties.

What inspires you to work with this craft?

Inspiration can come from many different places and it really depends on the project. Sometimes I have seen something I want to investigate. It could be a pattern in nature, a specific yarn I like or it could be learning a specific weaving technique to then turn it into something of my own. Other times the inspiration for a project can be a specific end-use where the solutions need to adapt to that. A source of inspiration is also the work of fellow designers, artists and creatives of any kind. Seeing how they use materials and techniques is very inspiring to my own work.I love looking at old books or finding material libraries with samples from long gone times. Looking at it from today with all the machinery and technology we have available you can be amazed what people were able to create with less means in the past. On the opposite I like to follow what new technologies and techniques are developed within my field.

How do you start your creative process?

The creative process starts for me when exploring materials. I need to be surrounded by materials, textures and colours to get into the right mood. When I am in a good flow state one idea just leads to the next one. I like working in environments with other creators but still having a kind of personal space for my work.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

My loom is a a huge room with really good light. The light is essentiel in the weaving process. I surround myself with yarns so I always can grab something a test a different yarn or color. I also have a selection og my favorite books that I can look into in the process to search inspiration.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

I would love to spend time learning about more specialized weaving techniques as using a fan reed, woven Shibori and testing out crepe yarns in specific constructions. Another thing I would love to do in the future is to develop my own yarn qualities as the material are the foundation for what I do and has a huge influence on the final materiale in terms of aesthetic expression and handfeel.

What have you learnt or the best advice you have received that you would like to share with fellow crafters?

Find something you are really passionate to do! To become really skilled in your craft takes time and dedication. One thing is the idea and the artistic expression while on the other hand you need to really know and understand your materials, tools and techniques to be able to express your ideas.
