Langackerhäusl

When you love where you live and you love what you do, working from home is the logical solution. This is the simple yet vital formula behind Langackerhäusl, a two-person team with backgrounds in costume design, tailoring, graphic design and visual styling. Combining vast experience with self-taught artistry, we produce our unique range of functional and decorative art. Built in 1885, Langackerhäusl is our house's name, which we proudly extend to the items we create there.

Q&A

Artist Statement

Our rural environment plays a vital role in freeing us from prevailing trends and opinions. Instead, we let the wisdom and beauty of nature guide our creativity and influence our ideas. Only those which survive a contemplative walk through the forest, advance further into the production phase. The end result may be a piece of art, a piece of jewelry or a piece of furniture, but it merely begins as an idea which pleases us and uses our capabilities to produce a quality finished product.

What craft do you work with?

We interact with our mediums on a regular basis, conducting all processes on site, in our home. This narrow proximity dictates our unwavering standard for material selection and working methods. Since 2009, paper has become our medium of choice because it is a natural material with a diverse range of applications. One of the most fulfilling aspects of creating art is first creating the actual material. We use our own handmade paper as well as other selected variations to complete our works.

What inspires you to work with this craft?

The paradox of paper is that while it is an extremely familiar material, its vast potential remains largely unrecognized. For us, creating works which defy paper’s typical parameters, is not only about fulfilling an artistic expression, but also about challenging the common perception of the material itself.

How do you start your creative process?

We’re involved in every facet of our operation, integrating our creative pursuits into our daily lives. We rely on our acquired skills, our self-taught artistry and handwork processes with natural materials. The absence of precious or valuable materials means that paper art’s value must rely solely on its aesthetics and an appreciation of the handwork used to achieve it. Transforming a modest and mundane material into an extraordinary design is not only an artistic accomplishment, but also a definitive confirmation of papers’ vast potential.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

The creative process always begins with our hands and our imaginations. We remain unapologetically analog, stocking our workspace with basic hand tools and natural light.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

Paper is a medium which offers us a tremendous amount of creative freedom. We are dedicated to exploring its myriad of applications.

What have you learnt or the best advice you have received that you would like to share with fellow crafters?

Art and design are subjective fields. To navigate them effectively, one must follow their instincts and remain true to themselves.Ultimately, our goal is to further explore paper’s numerous qualities and create works which advance paper’s standing within the hierarchy of appreciated materials.
