Ross Nally
Inspired by the local wildlife of Co. Westmeath, I create life size metal sculptures with a passion for predatory birds such as the Barn Owl.
Q&A
Artist Statement
Hand crafted, nature inspired, metal sculptures formed through forging and welding. |
What craft do you work with?
I always had an interest in creating. Having experimented with clay and wood, I tried metalwork and was hooked. I started my craft business 1 year ago this month having begun welding in late 2020.My favourite technique is the forging of certain parts of each piece. It ensures no two pieces are identical. |
What inspires you to work with this craft?
I am a big fan of wildlife with a penchant for birds of prey, specifically the Barn Owl. This craft uses new and old techniques, from welding to forging to hammer forming. Old school and new school combined. I only use mild steel. It forges well and welds just as good. |
How do you start your creative process?
Unless I have been asked to make a specific piece I decide what to create based on local inspiration. Based in a rural area, it is not difficult to find beauty in the local surroundings. I thoroughly enjoy the process of detailing. Once the piece is at a certain point, I can dedicate all my efforts to a finer level that enhances the overall piece substantially. The most difficult part of the process is the planning. Creating an accurate shape, size or angle as a base to build off must be right from the start or difficulty can arise later. While this is time consuming and difficult, it is also a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. |
How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?
My workspace is a cattle shed from the early 1900’s. Initially without a wall, doors and power, I have made best efforts to convert it to somewhere suitable to create my work. I could not do without my welder and forge. Though these are recent acquisitions, they have changed everything and have opened up a whole new range of possibilities for my craft. |
Are there new techniques you would like to try?
It’s all about learning. Every day I try some new techniques or ideas I have, to achieve what I am looking for. It’s not always a success but failure is just as important. |
What have you learnt or the best advice you have received that you would like to share with fellow crafters?
There is no time like the present. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. If there is something you have always wanted to try, then do so. You never know where it can lead. Take the leap of faith and believe. Learn from others, ask for help if required and be humble. I hope to/intend to work with Irish bloom iron in the future. Iron ore taken from the bogs of Ireland and turned into something special. My only professional dream is to be able to continue to create. I am very fortunate to be in this position and to have some ability to put what is in my mind out into the world as a physical item. Literally from dreams to reality. I couldn’t ask for more. |
