Susannah Weiland
I am a hand embroidery artist based in London inspired by the natural world. I work in two different styles - figurative and abstract. My figurative work is based on wildlife combining tonal pencil drawing with hand embroidery. My abstract pieces are inspired by sunsets, stitching French knots into leather to created textured artworks.

Artist Statement
I am a hand embroidery artist, inspired by the colours and textures of the natural world. I work in two different styles – figurative and abstract – with nature being the common thread. I am a keen photographer, and whenever possible I draw from my own photographs. My figurative work is always based on wildlife in a particular area. I love animals and like to observe how they move and interact. I draw tonal pencil illustrations onto paper and print them onto fabric which I meticulously hand stitch colour and texture, embellishing the birds, insects and other wildlife while retaining the monochrome drawing as the background. I stitch with machine embroidery threads to add the finest detail. My abstract embroidery series is inspired by the colourful skies at sunset and sunrise which I have photographed in Richmond upon Thames where I live. I hand stitch hundreds of French knots mixing wool, embroidery threads, beads and sequins to create a colourful pointillism style. |
