Q&A

Artist Statement

I am a young female Welsh Woodturner, currently living in London. I have recently graduated from Cardiff metropolitan University in July 2022 with a first class BA Hons. I studied a three year course called Artist Designer Maker. This is where I was able to explore different materials and processes within craft and where I first became aware of the lathe.

What craft do you work with?

Wood Working

What inspires you to work with this craft?

My whole final year was dedicated to being on the lathe, woodturning. I enjoyed the physicality of the process and instant satisfaction the timber gave me

How do you start your creative process?

I only use sustainably sourced timber- be that discarded waste, naturally felled trees of FSC seasoned timber.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

My work displayed at the final year degree show was a mixture of both clay and wood, although now, since graduating have focused my time more so on woodturning as I am this year’s Worshipful Company of Turners Cockpit Awardee.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

Square turning, also known as turning fresh air, is the technique I have undertaken to produce this pair of wood turned artefacts. this is a technically more difficult process in the craft as you cannot see the edges of the piece as it spins very fast on the lathe.
