Process & Production

In an effort to embrace the beauty and sustainability of local materials, I have made them an integral part of my ceramic creations. My process unfolds in a series of carefully orchestrated steps, resulting in unique and environmentally-conscious pieces of art. Material Collection: My process commences with the exploration of my local environment, seeking out raw materials that reflect the essence of my surroundings. Rocks, minerals, and clay deposits become my palette, each with its distinctive properties and hues. Material Preparation: With collected materials in hand, I transform them into usable forms. Using a pestle and mortar, the raw substances are gradually transformed into finely powdered pigments and additives. Material Integration: I  incorporate these local materials into my ceramic work in several ways: Inclusions Within Clay Body: Some materials are added directly to the clay itself, creating intricate patterns and textures within the structure of my pieces. Slip Application: Others find their place as slips, providing a smooth, coloured surface layer that enriches the visual and tactile experience of my ceramics. Glaze Enrichment: I also explore the realm of glazes, where local materials lend their unique characteristics to the final finish, creating stunning and distinct effects. Testing and Experimentation: My work is not only a product of artistic intuition but also a result of scientific curiosity. I test the materials and the various ways they interact with clay, slips, or glazes. This involves firing them to different temperatures to unlock their full potential. Record Keeping: Each experiment leaves behind a trail of knowledge. I document my findings, creating a comprehensive reference for future projects. This record ensures that I can replicate the results with precision, should the need arise. In the fusion of art and sustainability, my ceramic creations become a testament to the beauty of local resources. They capture the essence of my environment while contributing to a more eco-conscious approach to artistry. It is a testament to the harmony that can be achieved between creativity and the natural world.
