Chavant Med Red Clay is a oil base clay. It come in Green or Red colour. It is sulphur free so will not effect Platinum based silicones. It never dries out and can be left for long periods of time. It can be melted down and poured into a mould. Once cool it can be sculpted again. It allows you to sculpt fine details like pours, wrinkles and skin texture. For easy of use I use an oven set to 50 degrees. This allows you to work quickly and save kneeding. Each type of Chavant Clay, also known as Plasteline, is suitable for all educational levels and professional sculptors in the Fine Arts, Special Effects, and Product Design industries. Chavant modeling clays meet requirements for detail retention and surface development.

Culture & Context

Chavant NSP (Non Sulphurated Plasteline) is a sulphur free professional oil based sculpting clay and is probably the finest quality non-drying modelling clay available. It is used extensively by many Sculpture and Film Studios in the USA for creating models and sculptures prior to having a mould made. We have in this respect found that the clays perform excellently when using silicone rubber to take a mould. Chavant NSP clay has low odour and is certified nontoxic by the Art and Craft Materials Institute in the USA, conforming to ASTM D4236.

Chavant NSP Clay may require some heat to soften it to your required working consistency. The ideal softening range is 44 55ºC. It easily warms in hot air with no cracking or drying. The Clay has excellent adhesive properties sticking readily to itself or the armature wire. The Clay is tough but firm, and has the ability to hold excellent detail. The Clay can be smoothed with water, or (taking adequate precautions) lighter fuel or turpentine spirit.

Recipe Details

Once soft It can be applied to an armature or used just on its own. It will stick to itself. Can be sculpted by hand and with sculpting tools. You can use texture stamps. It will take details as small as human pours.

Softening Temperature: NSP Soft = 120°F / 49°C NSP Medium = 125°F / 52°C NSP Hard = 130°F / 54°C

Troweling Temperature 175°F / 80°C

Brushing Temperature 185°F / 85°C

Casting Temperature 205°F / 97°C

Max Temperature 205°F / 97°C
