My process revolves around experimenting, using press moulds combined to create a larger structure onto which I layer textures with other clay.

Process & Production

To create my vessels I press clay (usually stoneware crank) into moulds to produce forms. These become parts that are assembled together, sometimes in the full form from the mould, sometimes cut  to fit or influence the direction of the structure. Once the overall structure has been built, I begin to work on the surface by adding coloured slip, often porcelain with random brushstrokes. Then the next layer of slip is added as texture using lace as a stencil. This layering technique may be repeated a few times. And on occasion I add copper or red iron oxide washes in random areas. More texture is created by scratching the surface which reflects the human forms that make up the whole structure. After the bisque firing (1050 degrees centigrade) I sometimes apply underglazes, and then choose a matt glaze applied more often than not in random areas of the structure. Fired to 1250 degrees centigrade.
