Culture & Context

This piece was heavily inspired by medieval art and the use of symbolism, how specific animals, plants, and objects can have multiple and contrasting meanings.

Process & Production

This piece started off as an awkwardly sized piece of scrap fabric, too wide to dismiss and too long to use in a conventional frame. I decided to challenge myself a little and create a design around this specific piece of fabric, instead of cutting the fabric to the design. A lot of the creation of this piece has been about trying to conserve thread and keep the back semi-neat, an example of how I achieved this was when I was sewing the outline of the scales I do it in a specific pattern. You want to avoid moving far across the piece if you want to save thread, although it can be better to do this if you need to fill in small details in lots of areas. To help the scales stand out I went back over the outline of each one after I had filled in the main colors, this also helps neaten up the design. This piece has been pretty time-consuming, it’s only about a third of the way done. when completed it will be about 65cm long and 21cm wide. it’s been quite a long process, and I’ve procrastinated a lot because of this.

Recipe Details

This piece is made with Calico, DMC thread, a square embroidery frame, and a tiny needle. (I lost one of these needles a few days ago and I have no idea where it went.)
