Culture & Context

Mokume-gane is a Japanese metalworking procedure which produces a mixed-metal laminate with distinctive layered patterns; the term is also used to refer to the resulting laminate itself. The term mokume-gane translates closely to “wood grain metal” or “wood eye metal” and describes the way metal takes on the appearance of natural wood grain.

Process & Production

The clean copper and brass plates are stacked in a jig with flux in between the layers. The stack is heated, and silver solder is added to make sure that the stack binds. After that, I rolled the stack in a roller to make it tinner and to get a nice wood texture in the metal. This material can be used for many things. I used it to make a ring.
