Sgraffito on Ceramics

Heritage

Traditional

sgraffito is an ancient technique of image making as old as ceramics as a practice. Coming from the Italian word for scratch it shares a rote with graffiti and remains a popular way to incorporate drawing into ceramics practices. Typically one paints a coloured slip over a ceramics vessel and carves into it to reveal the under colour of the clay creating a contrast in order to build an image/
