Process & Production

The images represent 2 test pieces and a series of 9 pieces of finished azulejos. Using premade tiles, each piece was first glazed in white. Pigments were used to paint on top of the dried white glaze to create the design.

The concept for the above work is derived from a series of 9 pieces of azulejos found in a church in Montemor o Novo. Over time, parts of the glazed have chipped away. The work I have created is the reimagining of the chipped parts of these tiles, using the traditional technique of painting, yet introducing blue to differentiate and distinguish from the original tiles.
