Culture & Context
Experimenting with digital textile printing in the creation of a decorative fabric. It is said to use much smaller quantities of water than traditional screen printing, although electricity is required in multiple steps of the process. The design was created from original photography, using motifs such as butterflies which can be seen in woven or embroidered heritage clothing textiles.
I was attempting to create texture and depth through the imagery. The fabric was used to create accessories. The fabric was also steamed and blocked using the traditional millinery method to shape it as an outer layer for headpieces also made by hand on wooden blocks.
Process & Production
Fabric created from photography, digitally manipulated into a design. Different types of silk have been digitally printed with the design and then used to create scarves and items of clothing.
The printed silk was also steamed and shaped on a wooden millinery block to become a 3 dimensional shape, then applied to blocked sinamay to create headpieces.
