Using the wool warp dyed with waste coffee and an un-dyed wool warp, a double cloth weave set was used to create a series of woven samples inspired by the coffee industry. This particular sample was inspired by a latte.

Specific Technique

The technique used for this sample was a plain weave across both the top and bottom cloth using a darker brown merino 2ply wool yarn from Bart and Francis and then a
double cloth weave structure using the undyed 1ply Galway wool yarn for the top.
Although this weave set up is a double cloth when only using one shuttle and yarn for
the weft it creates one thick fabric instead of two cloths/ tubes etc.

Culture & Context

I have been working as a part time barista for the past 18 months while also pursuing
my textiles career. In this time, I have fallen in love with the process of making coffee
however there is a huge amount of waste that comes with it. Through this project I
wanted to see how many ways I could utilise waste from the coffee industry and turn it
into a new/ experimental material or process.
This sample is inspired by the drink – a latte. Looking at the brown base of the milky
coffee I used a plain weave and then for the frothy top I used the plain cream wool and
a double weave structure to add thickness and weight just like the froth.

Process & Production

The process of this material was firstly setting up the loom. When that was complete I
started weaving. The first 5” of the sample was a plain weave across both cloths using
a darker brown merino wool yarn sourced from Bart and Francis (this yarn was
naturally dyed by this company). The next 2” were woven using a double cloth
structure and the plain cream 1ply Galway wool yarn. When the sample was taken off
the loom it was stitched at the top and bottom to secure it and avoid any yarns from
unravelling.
