Culture & Context
These bottles were made back in 2017 during my internship with Maria De Haan on the island of Mallorca. Fresh from art school and the interest of developing glazes. I was inspired by the local area and wanted to make something during my time there. Olive wood is easy to access and using other materials in the local area to help develop this glaze. After lots of testing and developing, I created the formula and recipe for this glaze. A high wood ash content but with the addition of seaweed. The flux was high, allowing a lot of movement in the glaze.
Process & Production
Olive wood ash – I burnt the olive wood in a clean fire pit and once it cooled down, I sieved the ash through a 80 mesh sieve to create a find powder. I decided to wash the ash by placing it in water, agitating it, letting it settled and then removing the water on top. Doing that several times to help remove any unwanted things in the ash and cleaning it. sand stone – The sandstone I was able to collect was soft and light. easily broke down so using a mortar and pestle. I was able to break it down and pass through a 80 mesh sieve. Seaweed – I collected from the beach and allowed to dry until crisp. Broke down by hand and using a blender to help get it fine. Once I collected enough, pass through a 80 mesh sieve. local clay – Allowed to try out and pass through a 80 mesh sieve.
