Stained slab on hump

Experiment

Research

Clay slabs are made by layering different colours of clay that I’ve stained and compressing them together through the slab roller. The clay is compressed onto the mould that is attached to the wheel, and while spinning the wheel the clay is trimmed to reveal and expose the swirling layers of clay beneath the surface.

Culture & Context

The making behind this craft began through experimenting with basic moulds to form the shame of a bowl, initially hand pressing small amounts of clay onto the inside of a bowl shape then refining and changing aspects of the making for a smoother finish. The aim was to throw onto the plaster mould on the wheel using the pressure of it spinning to get an even thickness and join the sperate slabs of different colours before trimming through to create details.

Process & Production

I wedged stains into the clay and pressed the coloured slabs together through the slab roller. The slab was slumped over the rounded mould so that I could work on carving the outside of the bowl while the wheel was turning. The inside of the bowl resembles the shapes of different colours of slabs joining through hand building and rolling them together, while the outside is the result of compressing the layers of clay onto the mould with water as if throwing, then while wet carving into the clay to get varying depths and different patterns where the coloured clay erodes to reveal the details.
