Process & Production

Basic press molded terracotta tile. Traditionally press molded in a wooden frame using local clay.

Painted with white engobe when dry using a commercial paintbrush.

Engobe is scratched through with brush made from found twigs to expose colour underneath.

Twigs are then cleaned and dipped in smooth red slip and splashed on to the surface to create a third layer of colour. Wood fired.

Made at the Oficinas Da Ceramica e Da Terra, Monetmor-o-Novo, Portugal, www.oficinasdoconvento.com
