Q&A

What craft do you work with?

I am an Edinburgh-based jewellery maker and I have been creating contemporary art jewellery since I finished my MFA at Edinburgh College of Art in 2012. I work primarily with wood which I combine with metal.

What inspires you to work with this craft?

During my Master I was awarded a bursary that enabled me to study jewellery in Seoul for four months. This experience was the start of a discovery journey that has deeply influenced the aesthetic of my work. I work with wood and precious metals which I combine and juxtapose to create unique pieces that are sculptural, bold and tactile. The focus of my work is on shape and colour. What I enjoy about my practice is the process that leads me from the initial idea to the final creation of the piece through research, experimentation and development.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

My studio is part of a creative hub based in Leith, Edinburgh. Beside the usual tools that can be found in a jeweller’s workshop, I also have lots of wood working tools that I use to cut and shape my pieces. The tools that I could not do without are my saw, torch and pendant drill.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

I would like to try some textile techniques applied to metal/jewellery. I would also love to try some wood turning techniques.

What have you learnt or the best advice that you would like to share with fellow crafters?

The best advice that I could share is not to rush. There is something extremely liberating and very fulfilling about slowing down and taking time to enjoy the process of creating something. It’s easy to forget this when we are busy.

What other types of craft do you dream of collaborating with?

I’d love to collaborate with artists working with textiles and wood.

What professional dream do you have?

My dream is to open a creative space where I could make as well as offer various types of craft classes.
