Madalena Marques

I am a ceramic artist with an architecture background. I currently focus my work on ceramic tiles (painting and composition), with the aim of use them as an art that can be integrated in our buildings / urban space, and give value to our living spaces. Nature, movement, and organicity are some of the themes that are present on my creations. I also have been investigating and experimenting the use of natural materials in ceramics, as well as the application of upcycling concepts through art (with the reuse of ceramics waste), in order to integrate these experiences in my artistic works.

Artist Statement

Madalena Marques. Multidisciplinary artist in the fields of ceramics, architecture, and drawing. Born in a family with a ceramist mother and an architect father, I cannot deny the influence that this fact had in my life, because from an early age I brought me the presence of ceramics, drawing and artistic creativity as an integral part of my personal development. In 2010 I chose to pursue a degree in Architecture (profession that I practice until today), but I always kept in touch with other forms of artistic expression that I am passionate about, as is the case of ceramics and drawing/painting. Over the last few years I have been developing various techniques in the field of ceramics. I started by modelling pieces (utilitarian and artistic) and more recently a great interest in the tile has emerged, not only as a form of artistic expression in painting and drawing, but also as a potential integrator of art in architecture and urban space. Currently my work is directed to the tile, as a medium and support for the development of various themes that move between ecology, natural landscape, movement and place making.
