Finja Baufeldt

I always wanted to pusure a craft profession. I have enjoyed painting since childhood and used to take painting lessons for a few years. Now I am training to be a glass finisher and I am entusiastic about this profession, because glass is an incredibly beautiful material and can conjure up very fascinating atmospheres in combination with light. Also there are many exciting techniques to work with glass.

Q&A

What craft do you work with?

I work in glass finishing, divided into two areas: New production and restauration. In the New Production, there are many projects around airbrushing, painting, sandblasting. The projects are worked with the artists. The Restauration involves the preparation of old glazing, also it´s about painting and leadwork, etc.

What inspires you to work with this craft?

I think that glass is totally fascinating. You can do so much with it, and it can create such beautiful atmospheres and moods in combination with light. Also, there are so many different exciting techniques to work with glass.

How do you start your creative process?

I just start, but it´s important for me, that I feel able to do it. If I have a bad day, everything doesn´t always go according to plan and I can´t really switch off and get involved in my project. But the creative part is my favourite part because I´m free from thoughts.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

At may Workspace, there are all the necessary tools I need depending on the project. I could never do my work without my glass cutter, tape measure and cutter knife, because I really need them often. Also having a pen in your pocket, is always helpful.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

I have already tried out many techniques, but one technique in particular appealed to me: “Airbrush”. I found this technique fun, because you can also make really smooth colour transitions with it and generally everything is possible here as well. I would like to learn more about it!

What have you learnt that you would like to share with fellow crafters?

In tranquillity lies strength. So, it´s better to do everything a little more thoughtfully and slowly, many projects have time until they have to be finished.

What other types of craft do you dream of collaborating with?

I dreamed of collaborating with normal restauration companies or sculpture building crafts, because I´m also very interested in sculptures.

What professional dream do you have?

My dream would be to be employed in our company and to work in painting. I could also imagine, offering painting courses or something similar for children on the side.
