Culture & Context

This material was one of the projects in which I was exploring using British willow within a woven construction on the loom, as opposed to weaving directly with the willow to form objects. Developed initially with a view to outdoor use. Lots of experimentation was necessary in developing a fabric which was initially flexible but ultimately able to hold its own from.

Process & Production

Woven on a George Wood Dooby Loom.Warp: a double monofilament, 180 denier, warp construction, 3480 ends in total.
Weft: Ground warp: chenille, enamelled copper.
Top warp enamelled copper, silver wire, white willow. Weave structure: pleated double cloth.
On completion of weaving the material was soaked for six hours; then formed around moulds and left to dry. When dry it was manipulated into its final shape.
