Culture & Context

The use of screening in traditional Japanese interiors is a major source of inspiration for me, along with its contemporary application in Japanese architecture. The concept of ‘ma’, a space or an interval, challenges me to consider providing space to breathe, a gap to exercise the imagination, the possible application of empty space. When designing spacial divides, particularly multi panel pieces , the traditional Japanese Buddhist temple buildings spring strongly to mind. They fashion my thinking concerning materials and the form of the design. When planning the overall composition of a final piece of work I spend time drawing the design to scale and indicating where the colour changes will occur, this enables me to visualise the outcome. In all my work I want the composition to flow, to have a natural rhythm that coaxes the viewer through the work. This is especially important in large scale works composed of a number of sections. The viewer first has to be drawn to the perceptual field as a whole, and then move in to relationship with the detail within the work, new incidents appearing with each step.

Process & Production

Woven using a double cloth construction to create pleats and very different material effects on the front and back of the material. Ground warp and top warp are 180 denier monofilament set at 48
ends per inch per warp, 96 ends per inch total.Weft Ground warp: reed, enamelled copper. Pleats created on the ground warp are woven in paper yarn and enamelled copper.
