Culture & Context

Hakuya Noguchi is a fourth generation master gold leaf artisan, who lives and works in a Meiji – era townhouse in Kyoto. Here he creates the materials for exquisite obi and kimono sashes, woven from shredded washi paper ‘threads’. He also applies old leaf onto objects and paintings. In 2017 i was very fortunate to witness a master class at his home in Kyoto. His skill is totally amazing. I was experimenting with gold leaf before this class, it deepened my desire to explore the technique more thoroughly. I am a total novice so its definitely a work in progress. The cost of the gold leaf also limits the extent to which you can experiment as it is very expensive.

Process & Production

The panel is created using a double weave construction  with two monofilament warps. Materials: monofilament, snake grass, enameled copper, chenille, leaf metal. While still on the loom, the gold leaf is worked into the weft fibers between the snake grass and the enameled copper, it is a challenging process.
