Culture & Context

This piece uses the traditional technique of Needle punch embroidery with gouache paint to create dimension in the eyes. The thing I find with Needle Punch is that it can be quite constrictive when it comes to movement, you have to follow the rest of the chain. Yet I find the results are often very painterly and remind me of expressionism. This has encouraged me to use paint in my work.

Process & Production

like all my designs I trace my design first, then I sew or “punch” my design into the fabric, but this was the first of my designs where I chose to paint the whites of the eyes. This piece was part of my degree show work and its predecessor was an experiment with painting on calcio and after sewing the outlines on. In the photo of my studio space, you can see these two pieces next to each other with crying woman about halfway done. This piece took about a week to complete, if I’d used traditional embroidery the way I like to (single thread and the smallest needle I can find) it would have taken months. I don’t currently have a studio so I no longer have the opportunity to display my work this way.

Recipe Details

This piece required DMC thread, gouache paint, a circular embroidery frame, calico fabric, and glue.
