Culture & Context

I created this piece inspired by musuem collections. As you can see I’ve included a photo of the embroidery next to some real beetle collections that belong to the University of Dundee. Some of the insects depicted are based on real insects such as the Picasso beetle (Sphaerocoris Annulus) and the Hercules Beetle (Dynastes Hercules), while others are fictional.

Process & Production

I created this piece in my second year of art school. The white outline you can see is  gel pen, I was yet to discover water-soluble pens. This piece is almost entirely made with a satin stitch using a single thread of DMC thread. When I was done I was told I wouldn’t be able to frame it as framing at my art school was only for final-year students, so in a desperate attempt to have it framed for marking I made a frame from air dry clay and painted it black. This attempt was clearly not appreciated enough as I only got a C. This piece took two months in total. Overall I’m still very proud of it, but I’d like to find a way to clean up the pen and get it properly framed as I feel these imperfections subtract from the piece.
