Culture & Context

Iron ink has been used since antiquity and was the most popular writing ink of the middle ages. When mixed with gallnut the ink turns a rich blue/black. The Gallnut is rich in tannin and reacts with Iron to produce a colour fast ink for textile printing. It can also be used for paper printing or writing.

Process & Production

Dissolve Iron powder in a little warm water. In a separate bowl dissolve gallnut powder in hot water and mix together. Strain through muslin into thickened chemical water. Mix with an electric blender. Mix each time you use your ink with an electric blender as particles can build up and create lumpy ink.
