Culture & Context
Low-fired, ceramic firing technique, originally from Eastern Europe. The technique gives earth color, from the clay’s own color to brown, beige and towards black.
Process & Production
Process: The objects are taken out of a hot kiln (cf. raku) and dipped in a special fermented mixture – sourdough soup (see recipe). When you dip the hot objects into the batter, “bubble patterns” and other effects are transferred to the surface of the ceramic. The objects are cooled directly in water to fix the surface.
Recipe Details
The batter: 1 kg wheat flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 packs of yeast, 10 liters of water.
Leave the batter for 3 days (fermentation) before use.
