Stab binding is a form of bookbinding used in eastern countries such as Japan, Korea, and China. It is centuries old and still continues in use for some books. Silk is the most commonly used thread. Many books will just have 4 or 5 holes, as shown here, but there are also decorative and modern versions with multiple holes and intricate patterns.
