Headbands (also called tailwinds if at the bottom of the book, or endbands) are sewn at the head and tail of the book. There is a variety of methods used to make them. Silk thread is most commonly used, although cotton, linen, and hemp are also employed at times. They are sewn over a core made of cord, parchment, or leather, and are attached to the book through the fold of the individual sections.
