Culture & Context

I developed this glaze to represent the community that exists around the wood kiln in Angus. The kiln was moved and refurbished by a community of potters and each firing is a group effort. The landowner is collecting boulders next to the kiln for a future project and this is the rock used in the glaze. I currently don’t know what the rock is.

Process & Production

I sourced the rock from a site in Forfar. and the quartz on a walk near Inverary. The wood ash is sourced from friends as a waste product. I carry out a glaze test shown in the first photo to blend these three components together in 20 different combinations. I selected the glaze on the far right one from the top.
