Q&A
Artist Statement
I have recently been working predominantly with glass powders and pushing the boundaries of my technical knowledge to develop a new technique I call “stacking”. This is a process by which I create and fuse together layers and layers of glass powder wafers at the lowest temperature possible in order to create textured sculptural pieces that explore ideas of strength and fragility and human connection.
What craft do you work with?
I use a variety of kiln forming techniques using sheet glass, glass powders and lampworked glass to produce vessels and sculptural pieces.
What inspires you to work with this craft?
I take my inspiration from the colours and patterns that occur naturally in the landscape, and the coastline and sea have a particular draw.
How do you start your creative process?
Each of the glass wafer layers is incredibly fragile on its own, and the colour variations may not make sense when viewed individually, but when stacked they become part of something bigger and stronger and a pattern appears. The three stacks are linked by shape and colour to explore the idea that although we all have the common experience of living, the cumulation of our unique experiences shape and form into the perfectly imperfect beings we all are.
