Felix Votteler

I’m a self taught woodturner based in Tübingen, Germany. The material for my work is always fresh, green wood. It’s locally sourced and comes from trees that needed to be cut down due to environmental circumstances.

Q&A

Artist Statement

I mostly try to source trees that have references to the history of the place they came from. My aim is to produce pieces of remembrance, inspiring people to get into contact (again) with history

What craft do you work with?

Wood Turning

What inspires you to work with this craft?

Trees are archives of hidden history. Turning wooden history into elegant shapes.

How do you start your creative process?

Working with green wood has the effect that my workpieces warp and move while drying. Due to that my work is only part of the process, the tensions stored in the wood are as well important and give the final form.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

Most of my works are untreated. If I go for a finish I work with natural materials like fire, lime, oils or wax.
