Paula Armstrong
I create my work by combining the three main hand building techniques: pinch pots, slab building and coiling. I enjoy pushing the clay beyond it’s usual boundaries to create something unique
Q&A
Artist Statement
Each piece is individually made with the inside decoration built in as I go, often in a different clay like porcelain. Due to this my work is single fired as it’s the only way to decorate the inside as intricately as I’d like.
What craft do you work with?
Ceramics – Clay
What inspires you to work with this craft?
The infinite possibilities of clay as a medium appeals to my need to constantly evolve my work and my love of learning and challenging myself .
How do you start your creative process?
Part of my Potential Inside collection. It encourages the viewer to look beyond the surface and is a celebration of creation.
What have you learnt or the best advice you have received that you would like to share with fellow crafters?
Teaching adds another layer to that. I passionately believe that everyone has the ability to be creative and love teaching because of this. I get a kick out of seeing students’ faces light up when they see a piece they made fresh from the kiln that they love.
