Process & Production

Following on from the experimentation with casting glass honeycomb, the nautilus shell presented new challenges with casting an asymmetrical form with undercuts. Images show the finished pieces with details of the hollow chambers, all created from glass powder fused within the kiln. The mold used was made from flexible rubber silicone, taken directly from various sizes of nautilus shells, which was then used to pack with glass powders. The final image shows a large black glass shell within the kiln, prior to firing.  Essentially it is an unsupported pile of glass powder, ready to fall or fuse into it’s final form.
