Culture & Context

‘Fringe’ is inspired by allotments, the spaces they occupy in urban areas, often existing as a border between the domestic and industrial. Some go unrecorded on maps they have long predated and to the outsider looking in, the sections of land and their caretakers represent a varied cross-section of society.

Process & Production

Images show the silicone rubber mold used to cast the individual wax slabs of the greenhouse that were joined together to form the hollow structure. This was then invested in plaster and silica refractory mold material before the wax was steamed out. Glass was added into the reservoir and then the molds placed into the kiln and carefully fired to enable the lead crystal to flow into the thin channels of the form.
